Special Town Meeting Citizen's article: New Madaket Wind Turbine.
August 20, 2012 - 13:21

In addition to an article designed to revamp the HDC after the Martin's Lane debacle, and a couple of sewer map addition requests, some smart and forward thinking citizen (Barbara Gookin) had the idea of bringing back the wind turbine at the dump, but substituting the very same turbine we have at the high school instead of the big 900kW turbine originally proposed.
It would be pretty hard to argue with this idea. The turbine model is proven on Nantucket. And if one works, maybe the town will vote to put up five or six more going forward.
This citizen's aricle, and all of the other ones have yet to have their signatures certified, and they need 100 signatures, so all of this may change.

I am in favor of wind turbines. I think they are great and I only have anecdotal concerns based on having worked at the school in a classroom that was in the "flicker" zone (the room was almost totally windows, by the cafeteria). As a migraine sufferer and parent of a child with seizures, I was concerned that the flicker could trigger both. That said, the flicker was unusual and when I brought it to Mr. Cozort's attention, he turned it off. It seemed to happen only at rare times based on wind direction and where the sun was, and could easily be remedied with curtains. As far as noise, I found the one by the high school to be less disruptive than the noise from the ice rink when I lived on Cow Pond Lane.

...While those concerns are valid...
Wih respect, I disagree. The concerns of the other side are not valid. Taxes will not go up in any painful way. There is no such thing as wind tower syndrome. And the flicker effect would have been five hours a year with the large turbine It will be the same or less with this one.
I refuse to validate the nonesense people's opinion or view. It's selfishness, plain and simple.

In 2011, the British Acoustics Bulletin published what is now the 10th independent review of the evidence on wind farms causing annoyance and ill health in people. And for the 10th time it has emphasised that "annoyance has far more to do with social and psychological factors in those complaining than any direct effect from sound or inaudible infrasound emanating from wind turbines".

Also a lot of islanders concerned about taxes going up. Concerned about WTS (Wind Turbine Syndrome), the affects of shadow flicker (is that what it's called?).
While those concerns are valid, the overall concern for the wellfare of the FUTURE of the island and generations to come ought to be a very real concern as well. Hopefully the conversation on both sides this time can be less emotional and more factual. Less sensationalism and more realism.
It seems, IMHO, to waste such a strong and constant natural resource that we have right outside our front doors is so wasteful. Waste not, want not. One less extension cord from the mainland. Independence, sustainability and future generations who will have us to thank and follow in our footsteps.
We bit the bullet with the police station and thank God we did. It is being fully utilized, is it not? So will it in 50 years and so on. It seemed as though it was frivolous, wasteful, a ghastly cost to the TON. However, if people thought less of the cost now and could just imagine down the road the cost to the town. It's like the sewer. If it's not tackled now, it's just going to be more expensive in the long run. Does anyone really see energy costs going down in the future? What about our carbon footprints for that matter?
It's important to keep in mind that both sides of the issue are valid and important to hear out. To respect each other's right to agree to disagree and do so respectfully. Take the emotions out (which is uber challenging for this YACKer) and put the facts in.

This is good. I think the big problem with the last article was TMI ! You had people who owned rental properties that smelled of the dump (but not on the internet) who didn't like the big wind turbine in the photos. And you also had people who thought the plan to drag the huge thing over the wetlands was not well thought out. And you also had people who didn't like that particular design.
Let's just get approval for a wind turbine. Period.

I will be voting AGAINST the HDC article. The HDC has WAY too much power as it is,in my PERSONAL opinion.
I wish the Wind Turbine Article was on the 2013 Annual instead of the 2012 Special. I think this is too soon after the last negative vote. People will NOT want to take the time to discuss this intelligently at the Special, IMHO.
I think we are already looking at a two-night (anyway) meeting.
