Tank Farm Fined
December 12, 2012 - 16:10
The I&M is reporting that the EPA is coming down hard on Harbor Fuel for being ill prepared in the case of a spill.
Harbor Fuel faces EPA fine for inadequate oil spill training
Does the island really need a tank farm? Doesn't fuel oil and gas arrive just as easily by ferry?

I would say yes. Downtown? Well, probably not there, it would be nice to move the tank farm elsewhere, say Bunker Road. I'm not in the fuel-oil industry, but I would think that there is still enough demand for home heating oil in the winter where this island needs 'reserves'. Factor in a cold, windy nasty nor-easter where the boats don't run for 2 days (I know, its been a while since we've had a cold winter) and getting heating oil to x amount of customers and you have a pretty bad scenario there. Likewise, I would imagine that the demand for gasoline/diesel in the summertime is such that a few tankers a day could not keep up with the demand, and that bulk storage is a necessity. But what do i know...

I remember just a few, short years ago when it was so cold, and the fuel was so limited, that some providers would only deliver if you ran out.
YES, to the Tank Farm.
NO to it being downtown.
