White Heron Theatre Company to form Theatre Institute of Nantucket
January 23, 2013 - 22:47
Since the Straight Wharf Theater was burned to the ground several decades ago, the island's theater organizations have had to make do with scrouncging performance spaces from church basements and other public and private spaces. But soon Nantucket will actually have a real theater and a new origanization to run it.
Mahon about Town broke the story today of the new Nantucket Theatre Instiutute. I'm looking forward to it. How about you?
The story is here:

White Heron Co-Artistic Directors, Michael Kopko and Lynne Bolton.

Hi All - We enjoyed the play - but ...
We're no prudes - but ...
What a huge amount of obscene language!
I saw no warnings about that in the ads for this program.
Shouldn't theatrical productions be held to the same rating standards as movies?
I'm glad I saw no under 18's in there. But there was nothing to keep them out.
Just sayin'

Well it sounds good to me.
But I wonder what it means for Nantucket's Theater Workshop.
And it is yet one more charitable opportunity for Nantucket's 'givers.'

Shouldn't theatrical productions be held to the same rating standards as movies?
Even though I am affiliated with White Heron Theatre Company (I sit on their board and that of the new Theatre Institute) I would like to respond to this person not in that capacity, but in the capacity of someone who writes content for a living to say that, no, theatrical productions should not be rated like movies. If you know anything about the movie rating system, you woud know that it is a coplete and utter disaster and keeps many good films from finding their audiences. (There's a documentary called "This film is not yet rated" which explains the system and is very interesting and worth watching.) The MPAA is made up of a bunch of right-wing idealogues who should not be in charge of screening art in any way.
A better system is what is at work on this very page. People, like you, telling their friends and community, using social media, that you enjoyed the play but it does contain strong language. Now dozens of people are made aware. Perhaps hundreds before all is said and done.
As a periferal member of the White Heron organization, I will say that we apologize if we offended anyone. The goal of White Heron is to produce art of a transformative nature. Transformation does not happen if people's views and sensibilities are not chalenged at times.
To everyone else, if you want to see a very funny play, God Of Carnage is being performed tonight and tomorrow night, and some tickets are still available!
