Lobster poaching
July 14, 2010 - 08:51
I checked my lobster traps this morning. Arriving at the east jetty where they are located, I noticed one trap in a position where I didn't leave it a few days ago. As I pulled the traps, it became obvious that someone had been poaching at least three or four of them. I could tell by the way they replaced the elastic straps. Needless to say, there were no lobsters.
What to do? Inform the environmental police officer? Zip-tie the hatches? Any suggestions?
It's pretty annoying.

You know, Tashmoo, you don't strike me as the gun toting type. Nail gun, maybe. But not the double-barrel, 12-guage type. Here's what I would do. Buy six or seven of those plastic lobsters that look like the real ones. And then use a Sharpie to write, "Smile! You're on Candid Camera!" on their abdomen. put one in a few of your pots. It will keep the jerks from coming back. Kind of like the people that greet you at the Gap store. They're not being nice. They're just sending a message to the shoplifters: "You're being watched."

from the internets, info on protecting one's catch...
In the past, many lobstermen would keep firearms aboard their vessels to threaten any boaters or other lobstermen who were seen hauling their pots. This practice continues in many parts of New England. The laws of Massachusetts and several other states permit lobstermen to use force to protect their pots.
hmmm........

Wow. That's really a dickish thing to do to someone. Karma's a bitch. Ka is a wheel.
Hopefully they'll get a shellfish allergy or something.

we use zip-ties, at least that way there is no doubt that someone else was in them. some trips out to check 1/2 the pots have been opened. ( we only have 1/2 a doz.)

cable ties definitely. treble hooks spaced on the lines work real well.

Lobster cam?
Exploding dye pack?
Or ask the USCG to point the high-powered EOIR camera mounted on Brant Point Light out toward your pots. They may actually have footage of the culprit already.

don't bother, they will just steal your plastic lobsters too,
