YACK Terms of Use
Please read these rules carefully before registering. By registering on this site you agree to abide by the rules. If you do not agree to the rules of this site, do not register. Unregistered anonymous viewers have the ability to read all posts, but cannot create content.
Post Properly
Before posting, please learn how to post properly. This includes:
- Learning the proper use of the site’s quote feature.
- Trimming your posts so that only the part to which your post refers appears in your post.
- Writing subject lines that provide all readers with a clear understanding of the topic being discussed.
- Posting in the correct folders.
- Not dominating a given thread or discussion.
- Telling others how to post or being critical of the way they choose to post.
Copyright
When posting news stories or content from other sites, do not post the entire text. This is a clear and actionable violation of the original site’s copyright and opens yackon.com up to legal action by the copyright holder. Instead, post a headline and a excerpt, which is allowed under the US copyright law’s fair use policy.
Spam
Do not post spam to the site. This includes anything that you received in an email that you think is clever. It also includes posting the same thing over and over again (more than three times) on the site. It is also considered spamming to post more you’re your fellow users. A good rule of thumb is to post no more than five times per day, at least for new YACKers. Spamming reduces everyone’s enjoyment of YACK content and will be dealt with swiftly.
Advertising.
A new advertising policy is in the works. Stay tuned.
Consumer complaints.
Consumer complaints against local business are allowed on the site as long as the poster signs their real name to their post.
Anonymity.
Posting anonymously is acceptable, but it does have its limitations. You may take part in any discussion you like anonymously — with one important exception: If you wish to post anything that is critical of a person or business that is identified implicitly or explicitly in your post, you must sign your full, real name in that post. The best way to do this is to place your real name in your signature line by altering your user profile.
Respect.
We are an online community and we have community standards. We do not allow name calling or caustic posts. Please treat all posters the way you’d like to be treated. It’s fine to disagree. But not to be disagreeable. Do not dominate a given thread. Allow others to have the microphone after you have said your piece.
Your host
Giving the host a hard time will not, in any way, add to your enjoyment of the site. Trust me. Please do not call the host at home or on his cell phone to discuss anything on the site. Send an email or private message instead.
Removal of posts.
Posts will be removed from the site for the following reasons:
- Posting of libelous material
- Posts that are inflammatory, mean spirited or generally unkind.
- Posts of copyrighted materials not owned by the poster.
- Spam.
- Free ads.
- Consumer complaints.
Banning Posters.
There are only a few things that can get you banned from the site. They are the following:
- Posting libelous material.
- Being overly disagreeable and malicious in your posts, name calling, etc.
- Not signing your name to a post that is critical of a local business or a candidate or office holder in any local or national political discussion.
- Repeated violation of the rules of the site.
- Being a constant irritant to the Host of YACKon.com
Becoming Un-banned.
If you are banned once, it will be for one month. The one month will be lifted if you make an online $25 donation to Housing Nantucket, The Nantucket Dreamland Foundation or the Nantucket Land Council on behalf of the users of YACKon.com. (You will receive instructions by email on how to make the donation when you are banned.) Once notification of your donation has been received by the host, the one month ban will be lifted. A second infraction will result in being banned forever, or for one month if you make a $100 donation to the above charities on behalf of the users of YACKon.com. An infraction-free record of 12 months will result in previous bannage being expunged and you will have a clean slate. Some users who have become difficult to deal with or who have been banned for particularly heinous actions will not be allowed to unban themselves at the discretion of the YACK Host.
