Old YACK forum better than the new
May 25, 2010 - 21:47
Who liked the old format better than the new one??
Could it be analog, versus digital personality?

Quick question Grant, do you think you will be able to retrieve much of Yack2? There were days that i would search for things that my dad had posted and to think that they are gone forever is kinda sad.
I agree, Anna. We will work hard to get the archives restored. Promise. G.

On to happier thoughts... Kudos on Yack3, it's going to take some time getting used to it but i can tell that im going to like it.

Grant schooled me through emails and I now am able to post. YACK 3 feels better already. Thank you, Grant. **David**

I could probably go into the code and find the place where the "save" button is and replace it with a button that says "post."
Or.........just have add to helful hints section on features of the new Yack and use the saved time and energy to sit watching sunsets looking for the green flash.
Oh sure, rub it in!

Chub, the logout is at the bottom of the box in the upper left corner (the one with your name in it). It's right above the list of who's online. as for a "send" button...do you mean when you want to post something? If so you have already found it. I don't believe there is a way to post without previewing and then clicking "save" which is the same as "send"
May 28, 2010 - 22:47

Right!
And is there a "send" button that I am missing...and where do I go to Log Out?
(An answer from anyone would be just fine...)
Grant, you have done an amazing job here, so I ain't grousing. Just wunnering...

Just trying to figure it out how to do it all myself, but I'm sure I'll "get it" by the time I turn 60..in November.
GASP!
BUT, where is the "Send" button??

Look at the bottom of the page. You can specify how posts are displayed. Experiment with the different settings. A large thread like this makes it easier.

I'll get used to 3, but the old YACK worked well. The new model is harder to read (small font and not enough contrast). I had spell check on the last version, so no big deal to me. I wish the posts were all chronological. I'm old and confused. **David**

Now that I'm getting used to the new format, I'm liking this new one better. No complaints here. Thanks, Grant. I particularly like the "ignore user" function. It works great on the one or two trolls on the site.
Hey!
Here's a question. If Blair ignores me, does that mean he misses the Richard Swimming with Seals thread entirely? If so, we'd never get his take on the Seal poop messing up water quality tests. Darn.
Matt
When you ignore a user, his posts are hidden from view, but you will still see that he posts, and you can sneak a look at the person's post with a single click. Go ahead and try it.

Query: is there a way to set our personal settings to always disable rich text? It messes with html code.
The rich text thing was something I struggled with. I wanted inline images, but id not want a wysiwyg text editor. I just wanted text with no bold, no font options. But in order to have inline images, I needed to add the text editor. This means the TE is the default. Unfortunately.

Love the look and feel of the new Yack - neat and crisp. Drupal is a truly wonderful tool.
The spellcheck is nice, even though you had it before if you were using the Chrome browser!
Keep up the great work, G.

Although as you all know Grant and I are polar-opposites, I have to give him big time props. I know how many mind numbing hours go into coding and otherwise configuring to get Yack up took. He seems to care that we all have a voice here, although that may be a stretch when it comes to me. I believe suggestions are welcome, but let's keep the complaints to a minimum. Most do not contribute to our administrators wallet, and just keeping up with the rules and making sure that the site remains civil and not unseemly is a huge task all in itself. Thank you for all of your effort Grant!
If you ever want help from me you have it, we'll leave politics out of it.

Any idea who, how, and why Yack2 was hacked?
Yes, read the link tashmoo supplied. Truth is, the new YACK is constantly under attack from spammers and hackers as well. I have to delete about ten user registrations a day from known hackers. It's a pain and I may institute some kind of "captcha" or spam-thwarting measure over the weekend.

Grant,
I and we, all appreciate what you have done and for that I and we are thankful. It will take time to "learn" the new Yack but I agree Spell Check is great to have.
Thanks again,
As you say,

For what it's worth, I wasn't a fan of the "new" Yack, herein and after referred to as "Yack2," when it came out. I missed the old days -- good or otherwise -- of email discussion. After a few weeks or even a month or two, I grew to like Yack2. Now that Yack3 is out, I'm finding myself looking for it to be the way that Yack2 was, despite the fact that I hated Yack2 because it wasn't Yack1.
Long story short, nobody likes change, and some of us like it less than others. My experience tells me that once I (we?) get used to Yack3's interface and bells and whistles, we'll all be bitching when Yack4 comes out, because we just LOVED Yack3.

A lot of the answers to the questions people are asking are right in front of them if they'd just poke around, like the private message to the author button is literally under the the author's name
Grousing is normal for Nantucket, just as old is our main currency in this place.

I find it rather disheartening that people would complain about this kind of thing after I busted my ass to get this thing up and running. Especially given the fact that this new forum has so many new features like the ability to upload inline photos, spellcheck, sharing, and several things that users can't see.
If you don't like it, don't use it. The old site is hacked and dead and is not coming back. I'll be lucky just to get the database fixed and archives up and running on a new system.
So go ahead and complain you ungrateful grousers.
You're effing welcome.

I have to admit I have old Yack nostalgia. Just got comfortable with the old look and the features. The spell check feature alone marks the new Yack a quantum leap in Cool IMHO. Hey Tommy Boy, PM Me.

I'm wondering why the huge amount of white space with every post. Also why do I have to preview everything before posting? Actually I can't even find the post button. Just hit Enter?? Nope. Wait, is it that "save button" that is down below "Input Format?"

Let's refer to the recent Yack that just blew up as Yack2. Old Yack will always be the Yahoo forum version.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Old_Nantucket_YACK/
I frequent it when I miss departed Old Yack friends and their postings. Lots of good stuff.
Yack2 does seem more user friendly, but it took a few months for me to exit Old Yack. Anyone that hasn't already set my posts to auto ignore, ought to probably do so in real time regarding this topic.
I complained about Yack2, and ended up loving it. Give the Yackmaster time to work his evil magic.

It seemed easier to navigate, which I suppose is why there is so little traffic/discussion on this one. It might just take time for people to figure out and learn how to use this one, though.

Thanks. Thanks.
